2024 - Present Day FAME Campus
2007 - Site of Future FAME Campus
The founders' decision to build FAME in Karatu, Tanzania was due in large part to the tremendous lack of healthcare in one of Tanzania’s most vulnerable and under-resourced rural communities.
2008 - Outpatient Department
FAME’S original building for patient care.
2009 - Staff Kitchen & Laundry Room
FAME’s laundry room provides crucial cleaning for the more than 50 beds throughout the hospital. The adjacent staff kitchen provides daily meals for the more than 200 staff members at FAME.
2010 - Staff Housing
On-campus housing enables FAME to hire from a larger pool of applicants.
2011 - Laboratory
FAME has the only lab with advanced diagnostic capabilities within a 140km radius.
2011 - Founders’ House
By building their home on the corner of the campus, the Co-Founders/Co-Executive Directors were able to devote more time to FAME's mission.
2012 - Inpatient Hospital & Surgery Center
FAME expanded from an outpatient clinic to a comprehensive healthcare facility. Today this building houses a 16-bed Medical Ward, a 14-bed Surgical Ward, two operating theaters and a recovery room.
2013 - Lilac Cafe
Our campus cafe provides meals for patients admitted in the Medical Ward, Surgical Ward and Maternity Center. It also provides a convenient option for our patients’ families and our staff to purchase delicious offerings.
2014 - Staff Housing
As FAME’s staff grew, so did the need for on-campus housing.
2015 - Administration Building
The epicenter of the FAME campus, the administration building was completed in 2015. Today it houses FAME’s accounting department, HR and Social Work team, among other key administrative offices.

Construction of our dedicated Reproductive & Child Health Center, which includes our prenatal program, family planning services, an under-five vaccination program and a cervical cancer screening clinic was completed and opened in 2017.
2017 - Volunteer House
As the number of our medical volunteers increased, FAME invested in Volunteer Houses to house the more than 50 volunteers who come every year.
2017 - Water Tanks
Clean water is an issue in Tanzania. We are fortunate to have three borehole wells providing tested, clean, and drinkable water for our patients and staff. This water is stored in our high-capacity tanks.
2018 - Workshop & Solar Farm
Our capable maintenance team can handle many of FAME’s facility needs in our workshop. The solar farm has been critical in keeping FAME’s lights on and equipment running.
2019 - Maternity Center
FAME opened a new 24-bed Maternity Center, which includes a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), space for an operating room and four delivery rooms. Today FAME’s Maternity Center team sees more than 1,000 deliveries every year.
2023 - Emergency Department
Construction of our new and expanded Emergency Room was completed in 2023. It is strategically located directly across from our outpatient clinic and just a few steps from both our surgical suite and inpatient wards. Approximately 30% of ER visits are for critical injuries, traumas or illnesses.
2023 - FAME Vegetable Farm
The fresh produce grown onsite is used in the staff kitchen and Lilac Cafe.
2023 - Oxygen Manifold
FAME’s central oxygen manifold supplies oxygen and medial gases directly from the manifold through a pipeline system to our operating theaters and emergency building.
